Khedira ‘would be outstanding for Arsenal’

Former England international Joey Barton believes Arsenal fans should celebrate if the Gunners land Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira.

The north London outfit could move for the Germany international and pair him with compatriot Mesut Ozil at the Emirates Stadium during the summer transfer window.

He has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at the Bernabeu, with no sign of a fresh extension in sight, and would therefore not command a large fee.

Queens Park Rangers midfield man Barton thinks the acquisition of Khedira would represent a shrewd piece of business and he has been impressed by the 27-year-old’s performances in the World Cup, not least the 7-1 semi-final win against Brazil.

He said on Twitter: “Considering Khedira has not long returned from a serious knee injury, he was outstanding the other night against Brazil.

“He’d be some signing if Arsenal pulled it off. Then I wouldn’t blame people from wetting their pants… #topplayer.

“(Toni) Kroos, Khedira and (Bastian) Schweinsteiger deployed in the ‘triangle up’ absolutely dominated a fragmented, tactically weak Brazilian trio.”

Khedira made only 18 appearances for Carlo Ancelotti’s side in the 2013-14 campaign as he competed for a starting place with a host of star-studded internationals at Real.
