England coach Gary Neville has denied ever claiming that the Three Lions enjoyed a successful World Cup campaign in Brazil.

The former Manchester United captain hit back at suggestions in some quarters that he had stated his satisfaction with the national side’s endeavours in the tournament, which resulted in elimination at the group stage.

He took to social media site Twitter to set the record straight about England and the claim that he called for an overhaul at his old club.

Neville told his followers: “For clarity I never said or think United need to sign 7-9 players or that England had a good World Cup!

“Appreciate your understanding. Haha.”

Roy Hodgson’s side lost the opening game 2-1 against Italy, with ex-Manchester City hitman Mario Balotelli heading home a second-half winner.

Controversial striker Luis Suarez, who is thought to be on the verge of leaving Liverpool for Catalan giants Barcelona, bagged a brace in the next game to hand Uruguay a 2-1 triumph at the expense of Hodgson’s men.

By the time the final group game came along England were already out of the competition, and they ended with a whimper by drawing 0-0 with Costa Rica, who went on to reach the quarter-finals.
