United icon Neville: We need three more signings

Former Manchester United captain Gary Neville wants to see his old club make three key signings before the summer transfer window slams shut.

The England coach believes new head coach Louis van Gaal needs to sign a centre-half, a midfielder and a wideman in the coming weeks in order to compete for top honours in the 2014-15 campaign.

Neville dismissed suggestions in some quarters that he had called for the Red Devils to add as many as nine new faces to the squad to bounce back from the disappointment of last term.

United finished the season in seventh position in the Premier League table, did not win a piece of silverware and crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.

Neville, who spent his entire career at Old Trafford, said on social media site Twitter: “For clarity I never said or think United need to sign 7-9 players.

“I actually think 3 more of the right quality would be a good summer. CB/ CM / Wide MDF.”

United are almost certain to make the acquisition of a central defender a priority after losing long-serving duo Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic on free transfers.

Vidic joined Serie A side Inter Milan, while Ferdinand is still weighing up his options.
