Arsenal icon: Ozil and Sanchez to lead title charge

Sanchez

Former Arsenal striker Ian Wright claims playmaker Mesut Ozil and new signing Alexis Sanchez will lead the Gunners’ challenge for top honours.

Ex-England international Wright hailed the £30m arrival of attacker Sanchez from Barcelona and believes the deal could have a major say on the destination of next season’s Premier League title.

He also hit out at sections of the media for their criticism of Ozil’s performance for both Arsene Wenger’s side last term and Germany during this summer’s World Cup.

The midfield man is expected to keep his place in the starting line-up for Sunday’s eagerly-anticipated World Cup final showdown with Argentina despite failing to light up the tournament during his side’s fine run.

Wright backed Ozil and Sanchez to spearhead Arsenal’s bid for domestic and European glory in the 2014-15 campaign.

He said on Twitter: “Warm welcome to Mr Alexis Sanchez. Media can say what they like about Mesut! With these 2 for starters, Arsenal are back in the game baby!”

It is not yet clear where Wenger intends to deploy Sanchez, as the 25-year-old is capable of operating out wide on the flank or through the centre.

He could be a replacement for targetman Olivier Giroud up front, or he may be selected on the wing, where the likes of Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain tend to ply their trade.
