Ex-Chelsea star set for Serie A exit

AC Milan's Essien controls the ball during their Italian Serie A soccer match against Napoli in Naples

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is reportedly in line to leave AC Milan for Turkish outfit Trabzonspor.

TuttoSport claims the San Siro giants are willing to accept an offer of around £3.1million for the Ghanaian, who has less than 12 months remaining on his contract.

He looks set to be one of the first victims of new head coach Filippo Inzaghi’s overhaul, as the Italian attempts to free up some funds by slashing the wage bill.

Essien left Stamford Bridge to link-up with then-manager Clarence Seedorf, a close friend of the player, after finding first-team chances hard to come by in west London.

But the Dutchman was replaced by Inzaghi despite only being given four months at the helm.

He was one of a number of players who failed to find consistently good form in the 2013-14 campaign, which proved to be an uphill struggle for Milan.

They finished the season in eighth place in the Serie A table and failed to make an impression in the Champions League, exiting at the first knock-out stage following a defeat to eventual finalists Atletico Madrid.

Milan did not claim a piece of silverware and hope Inzaghi can turn around their fortunes next term.
