Atletico Madrid have agreed a deal with Bayern Munich for the signing of Mario Mandzukic, replacing Diego Costa who joined Chelsea this summer.

The Croatian striker was deemed surplus to requirements at Bayern towards the back end of last season after falling out with boss Pep Guardiola and he was immediately made available for transfer by the former Barcelona coach.

Interest from England had become heard with the likes of Manchester United and Chelsea both interested, however United turned their attention elsewhere and Chelsea signed Diego Costa from Atletico Madrid.

That move led to the Spanish champions to turn their attentions to Mandzukic, identifying him as the perfect replacement for Spanish international Costa.

A deal has since progressed well and according to SportYou, Bayern sporting director Matthias Sammer has confirmed the deal.

“It still hasn’t been signed but there is a verbal agreement between Bayern and Atletico, and between Mario and Atletico,” he said.

“I think you can trust the word of Atletico and we can report a transfer. Mandzukic has always been of exemplary behaviour. I can only say positive things about him.”
