FIFA won’t budge on Silva suspension

Thiago Silva

Brazil captain Thiago Silva is suspended from Brazil’s World Cup semi final showdown against Germany tonight and the appeal against the suspension has been rejected by FIFA.

Brazilian defender Silva picked up a booking in the Brazil v Colombia quarter final clash on Saturday and the caution occured when referee Carlos Caballo took a dim view of the player’s block on Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina.

This was the 29-year-old’s second yellow card booking of the World Cup tournament and as a consequence, the action saw him suspended from the semi final by default.

Brazil’s federation the CBF had made an approach FIFA’s disciplinary committee in order to appeal against Silva’s booking but the committee would not even consider it, standing firmly by their rule which states that appeals against suspensions (which occur as a result of two yellow card bookings) will only be accepted for consideration in exceptional cases.

The statement released by FIFA on the matter, said: “The disciplinary committee cannot consider the matter given the fact that there is no legal basis entitling it to grant such request.”
