Inter on brink of Cardiff raid

Medel

Inter Milan are reportedly on the verge of signing Cardiff City midfielder Gary Medel.

According to Italian source Tutto Mercato Web, the 26-year-old will arrive at the San Siro on an initial season-long loan deal, with a view to a permanent move.

Last month he was earmarked by head coach Walter Mazzarri as a key acquisition for the summer transfer window.

He impressed for Chile at the heart of the engine room during their eye-catching World Cup campaign in Brazil, which came to a cruel end following a second round penalty shoot-out loss to the host nation.

Medel was a virtual ever-present for the Bluebirds last season, making 35 appearances for the Welsh outfit, who were ultimately relegated from the Premier League.

Their Championship status meant they were always in danger of losing the player, who became their club record signing when he joined from Sevilla for £11million.

Cardiff hope to recoup the majority of the money they spent on the player when his loan deal ends next year.

Mazzarri thinks Medel will provide an effective foil for the likes of flair players Hernanes and Mateo Kovacic.

Inter owner Erick Thohir is ready to invest in their squad after missing out on Champions League qualification during an inconsistent 2013-14 campaign.
