Liverpool back in race for France defender

Rami

Liverpool are plotting a fresh move for Valencia defender Adil Rami after the France international’s move to AC Milan stalled, Football Express News can reveal.

A source close to Anfield told FEN the Reds have been monitoring the 28-year-old’s situation closely, having been impressed by his successful loan spell at the San Siro in the 2013-14 campaign.

Until now the Premier League runners-up considered themselves second favourites to land the towering centre-half, because he grew attached to life at Milan and a deal to turn his temporary stay into a permanent switch has been in place for several weeks.

However, Milan are yet to receive confirmation from the La Liga club that Rami will indeed be heading back for a second stint, giving Liverpool fresh hope of intervening.

FEN understands Valencia could yet hold out for the biggest offer, and the Liverpool insider confirmed Rami features prominently on a list of defensive targets, with boss Brendan Rodgers anxious to bolster his much-maligned backline this summer.

The Frenchman has less than 12 months remaining on his contract. He made a hasty exit from the club last term after falling out with team-mates and staff, having criticised his colleagues’ displays in public.

Rami made 20 appearances for Milan in the 2013-14 campaign, scoring three goals.
