Chelsea have completed the signing of England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British record transfer fee of £117 million.
Rogers returned from the United States on Monday, having featured for England at the World Cup, to undergo a medical in London before signing a six-year contract with an option for a further year.
“I’m joining the biggest club in London,” Rogers said in his announcement video, adding that the club’s direction felt “perfect” for him.
“The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward is something I want to be a part of,” he continued, expressing his eagerness to begin his new chapter at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had been tracking Rogers for more than two years, quietly making him their top attacking target despite widespread expectation that Arsenal would be the frontrunners to land him.
The club moved swiftly after England’s semi-final defeat by Argentina last Wednesday, with a combined effort from sporting directors, head coach Xabi Alonso, and co-owner Behdad Eghbali helping secure the deal within 48 hours of that loss.
Captain Reece James made Chelsea’s case from inside the England camp, while Cole Palmer, described by Rogers as “one of my best friends in life”, was also aware of developments throughout the negotiations.
The deal was underpinned by the strong relationship between co-owner Eghbali and Aston Villa owner Nassef Sawiris, with an agreement finalised on Saturday afternoon shortly before Rogers played in England’s bronze-medal victory over France.
Arsenal were subsequently offered the chance to match Chelsea’s bid but informed Villa they were committed to their lower valuation, with the club now expected to consider alternatives including Paris St-Germain’s Bradley Barcola and Bournemouth’s Junior Kroupi.
The signing reflects a deliberate shift in Chelsea’s transfer approach, with Eghbali previously stating the club needed “to add more ready-made players at this part of the project, to take [it] to the next level, to be consistent over time.”
Rogers and Palmer’s friendship stretches back to their teenage years at Manchester City, where both were 16 and starred together in the FA Youth Cup-winning under-18 side in 2020.
Palmer’s famous “cold” goal celebration, which he has since trademarked with the UK Intellectual Property Office, was actually inspired by Rogers, who first performed it after scoring for Middlesbrough against West Brom.
In terms of where Rogers fits into the squad, one source suggests he will primarily operate on the left, with Palmer functioning centrally as a number 10, giving Alonso significant flexibility in attack.
Rogers contributed 14 goals and 12 assists across 55 appearances last season, bringing genuine firepower to a Chelsea side that endured a damaging five-game goalless run under former head coach Liam Rosenior before his sacking.
Chelsea must balance their spending carefully, having already spent £47m on full-back Marco Palestra from Atalanta while pursuing further signings including defenders Pep Chavarria and Maxence Lacroix.
The club required a league-record £300m in player sales last season to comply with Premier League financial rules, and will need to sell or loan out at least a dozen players from their 37 senior options this summer.
Chelsea have already raised over £120m through the sales of Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos, Tyrique George, and Jimmy-Jay Morgan to help offset their summer spending.
UEFA remains a significant concern after fining Chelsea £26.7m for breaching financial regulations last summer, though an improved financial picture this year resulted in a reduced fine of just £2.6m, most of which will be waived if the club continues to improve its accounts.
