Chelsea have agreed a club record £117m transfer fee to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, making him the most expensive signing in the club’s history.

The 23-year-old will put pen to paper on a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the option to extend by a further year.

Rogers is set to undergo his medical on Monday following his return from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.

The deal also sets a new transfer record for an English player, surpassing the £116m fee Manchester City agreed with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson earlier this summer.

The move eclipses Chelsea’s previous record transfer, the £107m spent on Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez back in 2023.

New Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has been busy reshaping his squad ahead of what promises to be a demanding Premier League season at Stamford Bridge.

Rogers originally joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal worth £8m, rising to £15m, having previously come through Manchester City’s academy.

Due to a sell-on clause granting Middlesbrough 20% of any profit Villa made from a future sale, the Championship club will receive at least £20.4m from the transfer, depending on add-ons triggered at Villa Park.

Middlesbrough believe the sell-on fee also represents an English record for the largest such payment in the history of the game.

Rogers contributed 21 goals across 85 league appearances for Unai Emery’s side and was a key member of the team that claimed the Europa League title last season.

The midfielder has earned 21 senior England caps, scoring once, and featured in six matches during this summer’s World Cup tournament.

Rogers becomes the second Villa midfielder to leave the club this week, following Youri Tielemans’ £35m departure to Manchester United.

Villa have moved swiftly to reinforce, bringing in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for more than £50m and lining up Wolves’ Joao Gomes for £38m.

One major talking point surrounding the move is how Rogers’ arrival will affect star attacker Cole Palmer within Alonso’s plans at Stamford Bridge.

Rogers was among the three England players who earned a place in Thomas Tuchel’s World Cup squad at Palmer’s expense, highlighting the similarities between the two players.

However, the pair could yet play together depending on the system Alonso chooses to deploy, having previously used both a back four and a back five at Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen respectively.

Rogers and Palmer will compete for attacking positions alongside Estevao Willian, Pedro Neto, Jamie Gittens, and fellow summer signing Geovany Quenda.

Alejandro Garnacho is being moved on to help accommodate the new arrivals, though the group of attacking options remains large for a club playing just one game per week next season.

Off the pitch, Rogers and Palmer have described each other as best friends in football after progressing through Manchester City’s academy together, adding a fascinating personal dimension to their partnership.

Palmer’s iconic “Cold Palmer” celebration was actually inspired by Rogers, who first performed the pose during his time as a Middlesbrough player, a move that has since been trademarked at the UK’s Intellectual Property Office.
