Ex-Liverpool star comes out of retirement

Garcia

Former Liverpool playmaker Luis Garcia has come out of retirement six months after hanging up his boots.

The Spaniard announced his decision to join Indian Super League club Athletico de Kolkata on his Facebook page, just days after hinting on Twitter that he was missing football.

He said: “I’m very exited to share with you my new challenge.

“I’ve decided to join Athletico de Kolkata in the new Indian Super League. Thanks for all your support.”

The 36-year-old joined the Reds in 2004 from Barcelona and gained an immediate rapport with the Anfield faithful, helping them to famously win the Champions League the following year.

He spent three successful years on Merseyside playing under compatriot Rafael Benitez, and scored some stunning goals in the process.

The versatile schemer is probably best remembered for the infamous ‘ghost goal’ against Chelsea in the Champions League semi-finals, on the way to European glory in 2005.

It came just weeks after he netted the winner in the last-eight clash with Turin giants Juventus.

Spells with Atletico Madrid and Racing de Santander came after his departure from Liverpool, and he planned to quit the sport after leaving Mexican side Club Universidad Nacional in January.

However, he will now embark on a fresh challenge in India.
