Newcastle United have secured the signing of 18-year-old midfielder Sean Steur from Ajax in a deal worth up to £23m.
The Dutch teenager arrived on Tyneside on Wednesday evening, underwent a medical, and completed the formalities of his move to the Premier League club.
Steur has penned a five-year contract at St James’ Park, keeping him at Newcastle until 2031.
“It’s an incredible feeling to be here,” Steur said. “It’s a giant club in the Premier League and it was always my dream to play in the best league in the world.”
The youngster, who joined Ajax at the age of seven, left the Amsterdam club with a clear sense of affection but acknowledged Newcastle’s appeal was too strong to resist.
“I was at home at Ajax – I joined when I was seven and I leave with only good memories – but when a club like Newcastle comes for you, it’s really hard to say no,” he added.
Steur made his mark at Ajax in the second half of last season, starting in the De Klassieker victory over Feyenoord at just 17 years old.
According to Opta, among Eredivisie midfielders aged 18 or younger last season, Steur ranked first for chances created with 15, total carries with 231, and duel success at 56.8%.
He also ranked second for passes, passing accuracy, tackles, possession won, and duels won, underlining his remarkable consistency for such a young player.
Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe was full of praise for the club’s newest recruit, describing him as a “top young prospect” with significant potential.
“We see real potential in Sean and believe he has the characteristics to become a valuable player for us for years to come,” Howe said.
“Sean is an exciting addition to our squad. He’s had an excellent upbringing at Ajax, who have an outstanding track record of producing young players,” Howe added.
The signing reflects a broader shift in Newcastle’s recruitment strategy this summer, with the club targeting young players of immense potential.
Steur arrives alongside fellow recent signings Bazoumana Toure and Ewen Jaouen, with Newcastle investing heavily in players aged 20 and under.
The summer has already seen considerable change at Newcastle, most notably in midfield, where Sandro Tonali departed to Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth up to £100m.
Captain Bruno Guimaraes has also intimated a desire to leave, with Arsenal understood to be his preferred destination, though Newcastle have had no contact from the Gunners.
Newcastle are understandably reluctant to part with the Brazilian, and the club’s recruitment of young talent signals a determination to plan for all eventualities.
Of the three young signings, Bazoumana Toure may be the most immediately ready to contend for a starting role when Newcastle face Liverpool on the opening day of the season.
Steur will benefit from joining ahead of pre-season next week, giving him time to absorb the detail, structure, and intensity that defines life under Howe at Newcastle.
