Chelsea have officially confirmed the signing of Sporting winger Geovany Quenda in a deal reported to be worth £40 million.

The 19-year-old has put pen to paper on an eight-year contract, representing a significant long-term commitment from the Premier League club.

Quenda becomes the second high-profile arrival under new manager Xabi Alonso, following the £42 million acquisition of Atalanta full-back Marco Palestra.

The deal itself is not entirely new business, with the Portugal under-21 international having agreed to join Chelsea as far back as March 2025 under former manager Enzo Maresca.

Quenda is expected to feature regularly for the first team and offers versatility across multiple positions, including winger, attacking midfielder, and wing-back.

The teenager has already been putting in the work ahead of the new season, spending time training at Chelsea’s Cobham base before the first-team squad officially returned.

Alonso’s first session with the squad is scheduled for Thursday, yet Quenda’s early arrival underlines his eagerness to hit the ground running.

“It feels great to be here,” Quenda said in his club announcement. “Chelsea is a great team and I am excited to play here at Stamford Bridge. The club has shown faith in players like me and I am proud to be here, proud to be part of this club.”

The young winger added: “I am excited to work with my team-mates and the manager, Xabi Alonso. I’m a very hard-working young person and I like to help my team. I want to be someone known for having the right mentality to help my team-mates and who does their best for the club to win trophies.”

Quenda leaves Portugal for the first time after making 86 appearances for Sporting, including 16 in the Champions League, having broken into the side under former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim.

Chelsea’s summer activity extends well beyond Quenda, with the club also holding talks over a move for Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria.

The club have additionally explored the possibility of signing Crystal Palace centre-back Maxence Lacroix as they look to shore up their defensive options.

A move for Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka proved unsuccessful, with Chelsea failing in their attempts to bring the experienced player to Stamford Bridge.

Sources in France and Argentina indicate that Valentin Barco, who has already announced his departure from sister club Strasbourg, is set to bolster Chelsea’s midfield options.

Meanwhile, several players have departed the club, with Marc Cucurella joining Real Madrid, Tyrique George moving to Everton, and Andrey Santos set to join Manchester United following a £50 million agreement.
