Jarell Quansah is set to start at right-back for England in their World Cup last-16 clash against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.

The Bayer Leverkusen defender gets the nod ahead of Djed Spence, who reported a muscle niggle on Sunday morning and misses out on selection.

Quansah, 23, has returned to full training after rolling his ankle during England’s group-stage victory over Panama, clearing him for Monday’s fixture.

Wingers Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon are also expected to come into the starting XI, replacing Noni Madueke and Marcus Rashford in attack.

BBC Sport expects the England lineup to read: Jordan Pickford; Jarell Quansah, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, Nico O’Reilly; Declan Rice, Elliot Anderson; Bukayo Saka, Jude Bellingham, Anthony Gordon; Harry Kane.

The game kicks off at 01:00 BST on Monday morning from Mexico City, broadcast live on BBC One and iPlayer.

Regular right-back Reece James has missed England’s last two matches after suffering a hamstring problem late in the group-stage draw with Ghana.

The Chelsea captain has yet to train fully with the squad since the injury and was the only player absent from Saturday’s session in Mexico City.

The Football Association told BBC Sport that James was following his own individual programme away from the training field, while manager Tuchel indicated the 26-year-old would require a late fitness assessment before any decision on a place in the substitutes’ bench.

Declan Rice, who finished England’s match against DR Congo at right-back while carrying a hamstring issue, is set to be fit to start in his regular midfield position.

Newcastle full-back Tino Livramento had already been ruled out of the tournament with a calf problem before the campaign began, with Tuchel opting to call up Chelsea centre-back Trevoh Chalobah rather than a specialist right-back replacement.

Quansah primarily operates as a centre-back for Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen and this occasion will represent only his sixth England cap, with one of those previous appearances coming in the Panama win.

He joined Leverkusen last summer for a fee of £35m, shortly after winning the European Under-21 Championship with England, having spent his entire youth career at Liverpool from the age of five.

Quansah made 58 appearances for Liverpool and won both the Premier League and Carabao Cup during his time at Anfield, as well as a loan spell at Bristol Rovers.

Since moving to Germany, he has played 44 times for Leverkusen, scoring five goals, which is two more than he managed throughout his entire time at Liverpool.
