England players were largely unaffected after Mexico supporters attempted to disturb their sleep with music and fireworks near their hotel in Mexico City.
Footage shared on social media showed a group of fans chanting, playing music and setting off fireworks on a street close to the England team’s hotel.
Early indications from the England camp suggest the disruption had minimal impact on the players ahead of their last-16 World Cup tie.
Police in riot gear lined the streets surrounding the hotel, moving back anyone who attempted to get close to the building.
The heightened security presence follows a similar incident involving Ecuador, who were beaten 2-0 by Mexico in the World Cup last 32.
Ecuador had lodged a formal noise complaint with world governing body Fifa after fans with loudspeakers, motorbikes and horns disrupted their sleep the previous week.
The increased security measures reflect growing concern about the treatment of visiting teams on Mexican soil during the tournament.
On Saturday, the England squad were met with a mixture of cheers and jeers from local fans as they left their hotel to attend a training session.
England manager Thomas Tuchel dismissed concerns over his side’s treatment in Mexico, saying it had been “nicer” than he expected and that home fans were “friendly and respectful.”
The two sides are scheduled to meet at Mexico City’s iconic Azteca Stadium on Sunday evening local time, which is 01:00 BST on Monday morning for supporters back in the UK.
England will be hoping to navigate a famously hostile atmosphere at the Azteca as they look to progress further in the 2026 World Cup.
The match represents one of the most anticipated last-16 fixtures of the tournament, with Mexico playing on home soil in front of a passionate crowd.
