Benitez steps up pursuit of Liverpool duo

Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has reportedly asked Napoli directors to launch a double bid for Reds duo Pepe Reina and Lucas Leiva.

According to Il Mattino the Spaniard, who led the Serie A club to the Italian Cup and Champions League qualification last term, has made the pair his leading targets for the summer transfer window.

Compatriot Reina spent the 2013-14 campaign on loan in Naples and is thought to be surplus to requirements at Anfield despite having two years remaining on his contract.

Liverpool could take more convincing to part with Brazil midfielder Lucas, who played an important role in their push for the Premier League title last season, but they could be tempted to do business if Napoli meet their £4million valuation.

He put pen to paper on a new long-term contract extension in 2013.

Napoli’s preference is to sign both men on loan, but the Merseyside club will look for a transfer fee for Lucas while demanding that any temporary move for Reina comes with the guarantee that they will pay more than half of his wages.

Reina has lost his place in Brendan Rodgers’ team to Belgium shot-stopper Simon Mignolet, who joined from Sunderland last summer and impressed in his first season.
