Hamann: Disgraceful Krul deserved punishment

Holland goalkeeper Tim Krul has been branded “disgraceful” by ex-Germany star Dietmar Hamann for his penalty shoot-out antics in last night’s World Cup win over Costa Rica.

Newcastle United shot-stopper Krul came on as a last-gasp substitute at the end of extra-time as the goalless encounter was about to head into the dreaded battle from 12 yards.

He replaced Ajax’s Jasper Cillessen in what proved to be a winning move by head coach Louis van Gaal, but the 25-year-old’s two saves were overshadowed, in the eyes of some, by his deliberate attempt to put off his opponents as they stepped up.

Referee Ravshan Irmatov asked Krul to step away but did not caution him despite the fact he repeated the trick on each occasion.

Hamann, who played for the Magpies himself during a decorated career, insists Irmatov should have taken action in order to send out a message that such behaviour will not be tolerated on the biggest stage in world football.

He told his Twitter followers Krul should have been shown a yellow card and potentially dismissed.

“He was bang out of order,” said Hamann.

“Should have been warned booked and if he did it again sent off. Disgraceful behaviour.”
