Barcelona snub Liverpool deal

Agger

Barcelona have reportedly rejected the opportunity to sign Liverpool defender Daniel Agger.

Mundo Deportivo claims the Catalan giants were keen on the towering centre-half for several years but, having finally being handed the opportunity to secure his services this summer, they have decided to focus on other targets.

Despite seemingly becoming surplus to requirements at Anfield, Barca will instead target Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany, Valencia’s Jeremy Mathieu or Mats Hummels, of Borussia Dortmund.

Barca are anxious to bolster the heart of their backline after missing out on the La Liga title on the last day of the season to Atletico Madrid following a 1-1 draw at the Nou Camp.

They ended the 2013-14 campaign without a major trophy to their name and have since replaced head coach Tata Martino with Luis Enrique, who is in the process of reshaping his squad.

Denmark international Agger, who has two years remaining on his current contract on Merseyside, fell out of favour towards the end of last term.

He lost his place to France stopper Mamadou Sakho, who partnered Martin Skrtel in the centre of defence.

Liverpool are widely-expected to improve their defensive options during the summer transfer window after losing out on the Premier League title to Manchester City.
