Arsenal plot swap deal for Krul

Arsenal are weighing up a player-plus-cash deal for Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul, Football Express News understands.

The 25-year-old, who inspired Holland to a penalty shoot-out victory over Costa Rica in last night’s World Cup quarter-final, was one of the few stand-out performers in the Magpies’ torrid 2013-14 campaign.

A source close to the Emirates Stadium told FEN that Krul has been identified as a key summer acquisition and a bid could be put on the table as soon as the Netherlands’ tournament comes to an end.

The Gunners insider revealed the club expects to be met with fierce resistance by Newcastle, but hope the inclusion of one of their fringe players in the deal could tempt them into doing business.

Midfield man Mikel Arteta has fallen down the pecking order and has less than 12 months remaining on his contract, while full-back Nacho Monreal is another candidate who may be sacrificed.

Krul’s deal at St James’s Park does not expire until the summer of 2017, meaning Arsenal and any other suitors will probably have to stump up at least £12million plus a player.

The player’s value could also increase in light of his match-winning shoot-out performance on the biggest stage in world football.

If Arsenal land their top target, he will almost certainly edge ahead of current number one Wojciech Szczesny in boss Arsene Wenger’s starting line-up.
