Tim Krul proved to be the hero as Netherlands beat Costa Rica on penalties to reach the semi-final of the World Cup.

The game in truth was the not the best of the four quarter-final encounters with Netherlands unable to break down a battling and courageous Costa Rica side.

Robin van Persie and Wesley Sneijder came close in the space of 30 seconds but they found Levante keeper Keylor Navas in the same superb form that he has been in this summer.

Bryan Ruiz came close moments later as he found space in the box, but he was denied by Bruno Martins-Indi.

The game would then filter out until the 90th minute, seeing both sides fail to make the breakthrough, resulting in 30 minutes more of playing time.

Costa Rica’s energy and impressive will not to concede further stopped Netherlands, leading to a penalty shoot-out.

The Central Americans went first and Borges gave them the lead with a low effort, but Van Persie woul step up to level.

Ruiz then saw his shot saved by substitute Tim Krul, before Robben made it 2-1.

Gonzalez then scored his spot kick, before Sneijder scored.

Bolanos and Kuyt then both scored, as the Dutch went ahead 4-3.

Umana then had to score to keep his country in the tie, but Krul proved to be the hero as he saved the spot kick, seeing Netherlands qualify and set-up a semi-final clash with Argentina.
