United legend: Brazil are carrying flops

Ferdinand

Former England international Rio Ferdinand has blasted Brazil players for letting down their team-mates by frequently under-performing.

The host nation made it through to the World Cup semi-finals last night courtesy of a 2-1 triumph over Colombia, but the likes of Fred, Hulk and Oscar once again failed to shine.

To make matters worse for Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side, talisman Neymar has been ruled out for the rest of the tournament after being carried off in the closing stages with what turned out to be a serious back injury.

He does not require an operation but faces weeks on the sidelines and cannot play any further part in the competition.

Ex-Manchester United defender Ferdinand, who won a host of trophies during his time at Old Trafford, is in Brazil to observe games as a football pundit.

He took to social media site Twitter to express his concerns about Scolari’s team, telling his followers: “Brazil are carrying a couple a players in this team …will need more than spirit to get past Germany (in Tuesday’s semi-final)!”

Despite his emotional connection to United, Ferdinand found time to heap praise on Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho for his energetic performance in the energy room.

He added: “Fernandhino showed why he must start.”
