Real Madrid have agreed a deal worth up to £51.8m to sign Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella following the conclusion of the World Cup.
The 27-year-old is currently representing Spain at the tournament being held across the United States, Canada and Mexico, with the transfer set to be completed once the competition ends.
The agreement is structured at £47.5m as a base fee, with a further £4.3m available through performance-related add-ons, covering a permanent switch to the Spanish capital.
Cucurella originally joined Chelsea from Brighton in 2022 for £63m, meaning the deal represents a notable loss on the initial outlay for the London club.
Having come through Barcelona’s academy, the Catalan defender was understood to have been keen on a return to Spain, and had previously been linked with both Atletico Madrid and a move back to his former club.
Cucurella drew attention during the March international break when he gave an interview criticising Chelsea’s hierarchy following Enzo Maresca’s mid-season departure as manager.
He was part of a core group of Spanish-speaking players who were frustrated by the situation and struggled to perform under Maresca’s successor, Liam Rosenior.
Rosenior was eventually sacked, with Chelsea finishing 10th in the Premier League and failing to qualify for European football despite the temporary appointment of Calum McFarlane as caretaker manager.
Cucurella had two years remaining on his contract, despite having agreed improved terms without an extension last season, which is likely to have influenced Chelsea’s decision to accept the offer.
Former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso has since been appointed as Chelsea’s permanent manager ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
Since president Florentino Perez was re-elected and appointed Jose Mourinho as manager, Real Madrid are also understood to be targeting Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva and Inter Milan full-back Denzel Dumfries.
France defender Ibrahima Konate is additionally set to join Real Madrid after departing Liverpool, underlining the scale of the club’s summer transfer ambitions.
