Manchester City have confirmed the signing of England forward Beth Mead on a free transfer, ending months of speculation about the 31-year-old’s future.

Mead has put pen to paper on a three-year deal at the newly crowned Women’s Super League champions after her Arsenal contract expired in May.

The forward brings a wealth of experience to City, having earned 81 caps for England across a distinguished international career.

She was a key member of the Lionesses squad that won back-to-back European Championships in 2022 and 2025, cementing her status as one of the best players in the country.

Mead also scored for England against Ukraine on Tuesday, underlining that she remains in top form ahead of her move to Manchester.

“It was a no-brainer for me,” said Mead. “I think the way City play suits me really well and can get something extra out of my game.”

The forward spent nine years at Arsenal, winning the WSL, the Champions League, and three League Cups during her time in north London.

She received an emotional send-off during Arsenal’s final home game of the season against Everton in May, but has made clear she is fully focused on a “new chapter” at City.

“I’m very proud to be here,” she said. “I think this is a place where I can really fit in and help bring a different dynamic to the team.”

City’s director of women’s football Therese Sjogran was quick to praise the impact the signing could have on the club’s ambitions going forward.

“Beth’s achievements in the game speak for themselves,” said Sjogran. “Winning the Double last season was a special chapter in our history, but it’s one we want to build on in the coming seasons.”

Sjogran added that “signing a player of Beth’s quality and calibre can only help that happen,” signalling the club’s intent to remain dominant in the WSL.

Mead is set to link up with England team-mate Niamh Charles, after City agreed a fee with Chelsea for the defender on Wednesday.

The arrivals will bolster an already formidable squad that includes England winger Lauren Hemp, Brazil forward Kerolin, and WSL player of the season Khadija Shaw.

Shaw recently committed her future to Andree Jeglertz’s side, further strengthening a City frontline that looks capable of challenging on every front next season.
