Wolves have dismissed head coach Rob Edwards after just seven months in charge, following the club’s relegation from the Premier League.

Edwards was appointed last November but managed to win only five of his 30 games across all competitions, losing 16 in total.

The 43-year-old had left a Championship promotion race with Middlesbrough to take the job, replacing Vitor Pereira at Molineux.

Wolves finished bottom of the Premier League table, making them one of the division’s most underwhelming sides throughout the entire campaign.

Despite the poor results, technical director Matt Jackson had publicly backed Edwards as recently as last month, insisting the club’s hierarchy was fully aligned behind him.

“The plan and the goal is to get promoted straight away but we understand a lot of change has to take place,” Jackson said.

“If there isn’t alignment here, we’re dead in the water before we start, so that discussion has been going on for months already,” he added.

Edwards himself had spoken candidly about the club’s struggles at a Q&A hosted by BBC WM, calling for significant change and accepting collective responsibility.

“We’re a collective and I’ll take responsibility of course but it’s not an effort thing, it’s the fact that we’re the worst team in the league. That’s the bottom line,” Edwards said.

“I’ll be careful what I say because I’ve got to work with the boys as well for the next couple of weeks but we’re not good enough,” he continued.

“That’s the situation we came into. I knew coming here in November, I might be sitting here in front of a lot of very angry people because this place is in a mess. I wanted to come here, I wanted to try and help,” Edwards added.

The former Forest Green, Watford and Luton manager had already been involved in early preparations for life in the Championship before his dismissal.

Wolves had signed Kieran Trippier on a free transfer from Newcastle, with Edwards described as key to securing that deal ahead of the second tier season.

Raul Jimenez also returned to the club, with his Fulham contract expiring at the end of the month, as Wolves looked to reshape their squad.

Cesar Peixoto, who guided Gil Vicente to sixth place in Portugal’s Primeira Liga this season, has been linked with the vacant managerial position at Molineux.
