Denmark’s Football Association has confirmed Christian Eriksen is conscious after collapsing during the national side’s friendly match against Ukraine.

The incident brought play to a halt in the 65th minute, with the game subsequently abandoned following the alarming scenes on the pitch.

Eriksen, aged 34, was able to walk from the field under his own power, offering an immediate source of relief to players, staff, and spectators present at the match.

The former Manchester United and Tottenham midfielder had been fitted with an Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator following a cardiac arrest he suffered at Euro 2020 in 2021.

That earlier episode occurred during Denmark’s group stage match against Finland and prompted widespread fear before Eriksen made a remarkable return to professional football.

The ICD device is designed to monitor heart rhythm and deliver an electric shock if a dangerous irregularity is detected, and it appears to have functioned correctly during Friday’s incident.

Denmark’s national team doctor Morten Boesen provided an update on Eriksen’s condition, offering reassurance that the situation had been brought under control relatively quickly.

“Christian is doing well and walked off the pitch by himself,” said Boesen, confirming the midfielder had regained his senses in the immediate aftermath.

“As I see it, the pacemaker responded as it should. He was briefly unconscious, but regained consciousness very quickly, and we were quickly in contact with him.”

Boesen confirmed that further medical assessment will now take place to establish the precise cause of the collapse and determine any next steps for Eriksen’s care.

“He will now undergo further examinations at the hospital to determine what caused the incident,” Boesen added, providing clarity on the immediate medical priority for the coming hours.

The football world will now be watching closely for further updates as Eriksen undergoes those examinations, with his long-term health remaining the central concern for all involved.
