French giants eye Blues defender

Rekik

Manchester City defender Karim Rekik has emerged as a transfer target for Ligue 1 heavyweights Marseille, according to fresh reports in the French media.

L’Equipe claims the Holland international, who was included in head coach Louis van Gaal’s provisional squad for the World Cup before being cut, could be the subject of a bid in the coming weeks.

The French outfit are anxious to bolster the heart of their backline before the 2014-15 campaign gets started and believe the 19-year-old would be a shrewd addition, if the Blues are willing to let him leave.

He has two years remaining on his contract at the Etihad Stadium, where he has returned in the wake of a highly-successful loan stint at PSV Eindhoven in his homeland, which led to his recognition with the national side.

A lot could now depend on what the Premier League champions have in mind for the Dutchman in light of the departure of experienced centre-half Joleon Lescott.

If the League Cup holders struggle to replace the former England man before the transfer window slams shut, Rekik could find himself elevated to first-team duties in Manuel Pellegrini’s side.

City are yet to close a deal in their hunt for a long-term partner to captain Vincent Kompany in the centre of their defence.
