Scotland, Liverpool and Celtic great Sir Kenny Dalglish is currently undergoing treatment for cancer, it has been confirmed.

The 75-year-old former forward and manager had initially hoped to keep the news private but was forced to go public following an accidental social media post.

Dalglish revealed he had not intended for the information to become public, describing the incident as an “inadvertent social media post” caused by poor technology skills.

Writing on social media, Dalglish said: “I am currently undergoing treatment for cancer. Unlike my mobile phone use, the treatment is going well.”

He added: “Ideally, this would have remained private because that’s the way it should be, but my useless technology skills have forced my hand.”

Dalglish also appealed directly to the public for consideration towards his loved ones during what is clearly a difficult period for all involved.

“Obviously I did not mean to make this matter public so I would appreciate it if the privacy of my family and myself are respected,” he wrote.

The football legend also took the opportunity to praise those looking after him, directing heartfelt thanks towards the medical professionals involved in his care.

“As ever, thank you to the wonderful medical staff who have shown incredible care and discretion, not just for me but for many, many others,” he said. “They are a credit to themselves.”

Dalglish scored 167 goals in 320 appearances for Celtic between 1969 and 1977 before going on to make 515 appearances for Liverpool.

The iconic forward also represented his country with distinction, scoring 30 goals in 102 caps for Scotland throughout his international career.

Liverpool Football Club responded to the news with a warm statement expressing their full support for one of the most celebrated figures in the club’s history.

“The support, best wishes and love of everyone at Liverpool FC are, and will be, with Sir Kenny and his family,” the club said in their official statement.

Liverpool also echoed Dalglish’s own appeal, making clear that his wish for privacy should be honoured by all going forward.

“The club would also like to underscore his request for privacy moving forward,” the statement concluded, reinforcing the message from Dalglish himself.
