Chelsea are expected to reassess the centre-back market in the summer after failing to secure a deal for highly rated defender Jeremy Jacquet during the January window.

Jacquet agreed a move to Liverpool late on Sunday with the Merseyside club set to pay a £60 million package to Rennes for the 20-year-old at the end of the season.

Chelsea were not deterred by the valuation but the player reportedly believed his pathway to first-team football was clearer at Anfield than at Stamford Bridge.

    Internal Options Influenced The Decision

News that Chelsea intend to recall Mamadou Sarr from Strasbourg and their strong belief in academy prospect Josh Acheampong played a role in Jacquet’s final choice.

As things stand, Chelsea are likely to wait until the summer to explore alternative defensive targets unless an unexpected opportunity emerges before the deadline.

The club are prioritising a starting-level central defender and have maintained that stance since missing out on Dean Huijsen last summer.

Long-Term Vision Unchanged Despite Injury Setback

Chelsea’s pursuit of a centre-back is unrelated to Levi Colwill’s long-term ACL injury which has ruled him out for the entire season following surgery in August.

Colwill remains central to the club’s long-term defensive plans and any new signing would be expected to partner the England international upon his return.

Manager Liam Rosenior provided an encouraging update last week regarding Colwill’s rehabilitation progress and mindset.

“I spoke with him this morning,” Rosenior said on Friday. “He is getting on really good. What a professional. He is working so hard in terms of his rehab. It’s brilliant to see him out on the pitch now, doing his running. It is a huge step for him.

“Obviously an ACL is a really difficult injury. He is itching to get back but we need to make sure that when he is back, he is feeling 100% perfect. He is another outstanding player I cannot wait to work with.”

Summer Window Now The Key Focus

Chelsea are prepared to be patient in their search for an elite defender rather than compromise on quality for a short-term solution.

The club’s hierarchy believe the right profile may only become available once the summer market opens and broader options emerge across Europe.

For now, attention shifts to managing existing resources while planning carefully for a defensive addition that aligns with long-term ambitions.
