Raheem Sterling’s future at Chelsea remains uncertain as financial realities across the Premier League threaten to block a January move away from Stamford Bridge.
The England international has been frozen out of the first-team picture and has yet to feature for Chelsea this season, prompting speculation over a possible exit.
However, football finance expert Dr Dan Plumley believes Sterling’s salary could prove the decisive obstacle, with few clubs willing or able to match his current earnings.
Fulham pursued Sterling during the summer transfer window, but negotiations ultimately failed to reach an agreement.
Newcastle United and West Ham United have also been credited with interest, though both face their own financial and strategic constraints.
Fulham Viewed As The Most Realistic Option
Speaking exclusively, Plumley suggested Fulham remain the most plausible destination, but only if Sterling significantly reduces his wage demands.
“I think wages are likely to be the biggest factor in terms of club to club, what happens with the negotiations,” Plumley said.
He added that Chelsea would expect any interested club to contribute meaningfully toward Sterling’s salary rather than covering the full cost themselves.
“It’s going to be a club that, if it does happen, are prepared to pay a portion of the fees. I think Chelsea will want that,” he explained.
“They won’t just let him go and pay all of his wages. They’ll want some, coming back the other way.”
London Preference Complicates Newcastle Interest
Plumley also suggested geography could play a key role in Sterling’s decision-making, particularly when assessing Newcastle’s chances.
“We’re led to believe from what we’ve seen that the player would rather stay in London,” he said.
“So Newcastle looks unlikely from the player’s side of things in that regard.”
That preference narrows the realistic options to London-based clubs such as Fulham, West Ham, and Crystal Palace.
Plumley believes Fulham still stand out among that group, albeit with reservations.
“I think Fulham would be the one for me,” he said, while acknowledging financial concerns.
No Clear-Cut Destination Emerges
Despite interest, Plumley warned there is a genuine possibility Sterling remains at Chelsea due to the lack of suitable offers.
West Ham have already invested heavily in recent windows, limiting their flexibility.
Fulham may be unwilling to stretch their wage structure, while Crystal Palace traditionally avoid being pressured into high salaries.
“There are no clear-cut options at the moment,” Plumley admitted.
“I think there’s also a scenario where none of those happen to be honest.”
Leeds Monitor Situation Amid Squad Decisions
Leeds United have also been mentioned as potential suitors as they explore attacking reinforcements for January.
Daniel Farke’s side have moved away from relegation danger, easing immediate pressure to overhaul the squad.
Striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s improved form has further reduced the urgency for attacking additions.
As a result, Leeds may prioritise defensive reinforcements instead.
Chelsea defender Axel Disasi, another player yet to feature this season, is reportedly under consideration as an alternative target.
