Former Tottenham defender Graham Roberts has backed new coach Mauricio Pochettino as the right man to lead Spurs in their campaign for cup victory next season.

Ex-Spurs hardman Graham, who was a fans’ favourite in the early 1980’s, has offered new boss Pochettino his vote of confidence and described him as a ‘Tottenham-type manager.’

Graham, 54, admired the Argentine’s style of football during his time in charge at Southampton last season and is certain it will fit the bill at White Hart Lane.

He told Football Express News: “I like the way Pochettino plays football, his style will fit Tottenham very well.

“Tottenham need get back to that sort of push-and-run style, which is exactly what Pochettino was doing at Southampton.

“They were pushing other teams off the pitch with a lot of pace at the back, driving forward.”

Graham explained the reasoning behind previous managers having arrived at Spurs and failed in their mission to make the side successful again – they had tried to change the style of play, which never works at Tottenham.

“When you play at Tottenham you always have to play a certain way” he said, “managers have come in and tried to play other ways, and failed every time.

“I think if Tottenham go back to that sort of push-and-run style, they will win a lot of games under Pochettino next season.”
