‘Scottish Messi’ joins Sporting Lisbon

Ryan-Gauld

Midfielder Ryan Gauld has completed his move to Sporting Lisbon from Dundee United for an undisclosed fee.

The 18-year-old who has been widely likened to Barcelona and Argentina Lionel Messi, has agreed a six-year contract with the Portuguese giants.

His move to Portugal will see him arrive with a buyout clause of 60m euros, making him one of the most exciting young players in Scottish football.

Gauld made his senior debut for United inn May 2012 and quickly made some impressive performances, scoring eight goals in his first full season last campaign and interest from a number of top European clubs began to develop.

Sporting, who have a history of signing talented British youngster, following their development of England U21 international Eric Dier, made the first moves and a deal is set to be announced later on Wednesday by both clubs.

Nicknamed ‘Mini-Messi’ by his Dundee United team-mates, Gauld was short-listed for the PFA Scottish Young Player of the Year award.
