Ex-Chelsea star set to lead exodus

AC Milan's Essien controls the ball during their Italian Serie A soccer match against Napoli in Naples

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien is reportedly set to fall victim to a clear-out at AC Milan, which could see up to a dozen players leave.

Italian source Tutto Mercato Web claims the 31-year-old could find himself looking for a new club during the summer transfer window despite having 12 months left on his contract.

New head coach Filippo Inzaghi, who replaced Dutchman Clarence Seedorf at the helm last month, is planning a major overhaul of the squad in the wake of a torrid 2013-14 campaign.

They finished eighth in the Serie A table, failed to win a piece of silverware and did not make an impression in the Champions League.

Essien, who spent eight years at Stamford Bridge before a season-long loan at La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid, was deemed surplus to requirements in west London and left in January.

He penned an 18-month deal but now looks likely to join the likes of Brazil forward Robinho, defender Kevin Constant and forward pair M’Baye Niang and Alessandro Matri in heading for the exit door.

Inzaghi is unable to significantly strengthen his side until the wage bill has been slashed, which means he must wait until some of his highest earners are sold.
