Schalke defender Benedikt Howedes says he has rejected the chance to join Arsenal this summer.

The German international played every minute of Germany’s successful World Cup win last summer but remained at Schalke despite interest from the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid and Arsenal.

Howedes, 27, has been with the Bundesliga side his entire career, making his debut in 2007, and recent links with a move to the Emirates stadium have forced him to discuss his future plans.

He insists he has no intention of leaving the Royal Blues, saying: “Arsenal and AC Milan were really keen on my services, but I have decided in favour of Schalke.”

Howedes, is thought to be valued at around £15m.
