Lionel Messi provided an assist for Angel di Maria, who scored the winning goal for Argentina against Switzerland in extra time.

Both sides started the game nervously with very few chances being created in the opening exchanges, but it was the Swiss who had the first real clear cut chance as Xherdan Shaqiri squared the ball to Granit Xhaka, who sent his low effort straight at Sergio Romero.

Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side continued to look the more likely to score and Shaqiri created once more, setting up Josip Drmic but the striker was unable to direct his chip over Romero into the back of the net.

Argentina did manage to muster a good effort on goal when Gonzalo Higuain came close, but the Napoli striker’s header was tipped over the bar by Diego Benaglio.

Moments later and Lionel Messi would come close, seeing his volley go just over the crossbar.

The Barcelona forward began to grow into the game and it was he who created the most chances in the extra time period.

And his determination saw him play in Angel di Maria, who obliged to put the ball into the bottom corner and send Argentina through to the next round.
