Manchester United keeper David de Gea will forfeit £12m in wages to secure a move to Real Madrid, according to reports.

The 24-year-old Spaniard has been hot on the press in recent months after links with a return La Liga with Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants are keen to find a long-term replacement for Iker Casillas, who has been suffering a severe drop in form for a number of years now and they see De Gea as the perfect option.

De Gea left La Liga in 2011 from Atletico Madrid to secure a move to Old Trafford and has since become one of the best keepers in European football, winning United’s Player of the Year award consecutively.

According to reports, De Gea was offered a new £200,000 per week deal to remain with United, but has chosen to reject the deal and forego £12m in wages to move to Madrid.

United boss Louis van Gaal is resigned to losing his top class number one but has indicated Hugo Lloris, Asmir Begovic and Victor Valdes as potential replacements.
