France have made it through to the last eight after beating Nigeria with two goals in the final 11 minutes.

It was the Africans who dominated the early goings and it was goal hungry Ahmed Musa who came close in the 19th minute when he saw his prodded effort go close.

That effort came just before he set up Emmanuel Emenike, but the busty striker was unable to direct his header at the back post.

France looked jaded and tired in the Brazilian heat, but they did create a first half chance through Paul Pogba, who raced forward to find Mathieu Valbuena, who then sent a volley but the impressive Vincent Enyeama was on hand to deny the Marseille midfielder.

Peter Odemwingie would then come close after the restart but it was a chance that saw Nigeria begin to tire themselves, leaving France to finish the game strongly and seal their passage to the quarter-finals.

The impressive Pogba was on hand to head past Enyeama, who parried a corner, before Valbuana’s cross came in off Joseph Yobo.

Didier Deschamps’s side will next face either Germany or Algeria in the first quarter-final.
