Legend: England invented football but cannot deliver the goods

England may have invented the game of football, but their days of possessing world class talent are long gone and this is why they fell out of bed in Brazil, according to Chelsea legend Ron Harris.

England found themselves dumped out of the World Cup during the early group stage of the competition, limping across the line in forth place behind Italy in third, Uruguay in second and Costa Rica in first.

Former Chelsea captain Ron Harris, who served his time in the beautiful game during the 1960’s and 70’s, said the quality of players England possessed in his day were graced with the skill and talent to win major tournaments.

The particular period of significance being 1966, the year England won the World Cup and West Ham hero Bobby Moore lifted the trophy as captain.

He told Football Express News: “We just haven’t got the quality players in the England squad nowadays.

“If you go back to 1966, the England team who won the World Cup, we had four world class players that would have got into any country’s top eleven, that was Gordon Banks, Bobby Moore, Bobby Charlton and Jimmy Greaves.

“The players we have in England who make our so-called ‘best eleven,’ they wouldn’t even make a reserve eleven elsewhere and that just shows the big difference in quality compared to other national teams.”

Harris explained how England’s ranking on the world stage is a very poor reflection of the fact England as a nation invented the game of football back in the 1800’s.

“England are ranked about the 15th or 16th nation in the world for football and when you consider we invented the game, this is just not good enough, we can’t produce the players.”
