Newcastle are chasing a trio of British targets as they seek to strengthen in the summer, including Charlie Austin, reports Daily Star.

Hull City defender James Chester, Chelsea striker Patrick Bamford and Austin have all emerged as transfer targets for Newcastle United.

Having struggled domestically following the departure of Alan Pardew to Crystal Palace midway through the season, Toon bosses are desperate to improve things at St. James Park next season.

Whilst, no permanent manager has been signed – the club are doing things behind the scenes to ensure the new boss has the right calibre of players to work with.

Austin, who was relegated with Queens Park Rangers this season is expected to return to the Premier League with both Newcastle and Palace showing interest.

Meanwhile, Chester is in a similar situation, having been relegated with Hull City.

Finally, Bamford, who has impressed at Championship level for Middlesbrough this season, helping them to a Play-off final place – has also emerged as a potential new signing with Newcastle keen to explore the possibility of a one-year loan deal from Premier League champions Chelsea.
