Roberto Di Matteo has resigned as manager of Bundesliga club Schalke after less than a year in charge

This was the first job for the Italian after his short stint as Chelsea boss which saw him clinch the FA Cup and the club’s first ever Champions League title. After a two year break from football he was named as Schalke manager in November 2014 and took over a side languishing in 11th place.

Domestically, Schalke have been poor, failing to secure a Champions League place, losing on the final match day 2-0 to Hamburg.

Famous for guiding Chelsea to a Champions League trophy back in 2012, Di Matteo has failed to replicate his success elsewhere.

Reports have emerged on social media linking him with a return to England, where jobs such as West Ham, Newcastle and potentially – Sunderland, are up for grabs.

Writers View: The Italian still has solid foray of accomplishments within  his early stages as a manager and I think many sides across Europe will have him high on their shortlist if a new manager is required.
