Southampton midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin has confirmed transfer talks with Arsenal ahead of a proposed summer move

Schneiderlin has been a key component in Southampton’s rise in the Premier League and his consistent performances have caught the attention of many big sides across Europe.

Spurs have also expressed an interest but the guarantee of Champions League football has put the Gunners in pole position to prize away the Frenchman from the south coast.

Arsenal have longed for an experienced defensive midfielder and Schneiderlin’s combative and efficient style could be the final piece for Arsene Wenger to lay down a serious challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The Saints are likely to let the midfielder leave providing their £25 million price tag is met.

Schneiderlin told French radio station RMC: “There are ongoing discussions but nothing is done. But of course the Champions League is my goal. If I leave Southampton it will be for a club in the Champions League.

Writers View: I think this would be a brilliant signing for Arsenal as they need to balance out a midfield that is dominated by creative and technically gifted players. Nemanja Matic at Chelsea is proof that having solid defensive minded players gives you a solid foundation to implement a winning style of football.
