Tottenham Hotspur are the latest Premier League club to have joined the race to sign Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne this summer.

Both Chelsea and Manchester United’s interest in the promising full-back has been widely reported recently, but according to the Telegraph Spurs are closely monitoring Clyne’s contract situation at St Mary’s.

Clyne’s contract runs out at the end of next season and while Southampton remain optimistic he will commit his future to the club in the coming weeks, Spurs are hoping to capitalise on the situation.

Kyle Walker has had a tough season at Spurs after struggling to come back from an injury that saw him miss the World Cup, only to pick up another injury against Burnley at the beginning of April.

Spurs’ interest in Clyne is not to be seen as an attempt to replace Walker, but instead a chance to invest in homegrown talent and create competition for places within Pochettino’s Spurs squad – a policy that has seen Danny Rose’s performances hit a new level this season after Spurs signed Ben Davies from Swansea.

Clyne is the latest Southampton player to find himself on Spurs’ radar with the club still very interested in snapping up long term target Morgan Schneiderlin this summer.
