Barcelona midfielder Alex Song has emerged as a surprise transfer target for Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester City.

Alex Song made a return to the Premier League this season after a loan move to West Ham where he has impressed. He’s reminded many of what a good player he was for Arsenal – able to both break up the play and start attacks from midfield.

It’s been reported by the Daily Mail that Barcelona are looking to offload the Cameroonian international for a £6million fee, which has turned the heads of Chelsea and Manchester City.

It’s not only the fee that has attracted both clubs, it’s the fact Song is considered a homegrown player after joining Arsenal at just 17 years old. Both Chelsea and Manchester City are in desperate need of homegrown talent to fill the necessary quota and Song may well be the answer.

His homegrown status, relatively small fee and proven Premier League experience would mean he’d be a very useful addition to either squad next season, while at Manchester City he could help fill the gap left by Yaya Toure’s reported departure to Inter Milan.
