Brazil beat Chile on penalties

Brazil held their nerve as they beat fellow South American side Chile on penalties to advance to the World Cup quarter-finals.

The game in Belo Horizonte started heated with both sides sending in some crashing tackles, which saw Brazil forward Neymar subject to a hefty challenge by Arturo Vidal.

Both sides did settle down and create chances as both Marcelo and Marcelo Diaz came close with long range efforts.

Hulk was then hauled down in the box by Mauricio Isla, but referee Howard Webb would wave away protests from the big forward.

Moments later, however, Brazil would find themselves in the lead after former Chelsea defender, now of Paris Saint Germain – David Luiz was on hand to tap home at the back post following a corner kick.

However, Alexis Sanchez – in red hot form, would find the equaliser with a superb finish that beat Julio Cesar.

The score would remain the same through to half-time and in-fact until full-time after both sides battled it out in the second half.

Hulk was once again involved in a controversial decision by the English official, seeing his goal ruled out for handball.

Mauricio Pinilla would smash the crossbar late on but neither side could find a winner and the game headed for extra time.

A mix of tired legs and half-cut chances saw both sides again fail to find a winner and the game headed for a dreaded penalty shoot-out.

Penalties began with Luiz scoring first, followed by Julio Cesar’s save Pinilla’s strike.

Willian would then send his spot-kick wide, whilst Alexis Sanchez also missed, but both Marcelo and Aranguiz converted.

Claudio Bravo then denied Hulk, before Marcelo Diaz made it 2-2, but Neymar would step up to cooly finish his penalty, leaving Gonzalo Jara last to take – and he missed, leaving Brazil victors and going through the quarter-finals, where they will meet either Colombia or Uruguay.
