Southampton want to sign Wojciech Szczesny on loan from Arsenal for the new season as cover for the injured Fraser Forster, according to The Sun.

Polish stopper Szczesny lost his Arsenal starting spot to David Ospina after a string of poor performances and off field problems, which culminated after the Gunners New Year’s day defeat to Southampton, when he was caught smoking in the dressing room.

A number of European clubs have since shown interest, but it is the Saints who are keen to make a summer move.

Ronald Koeman’s side have lost current number one Fraser Forster to a knee injury which specialists have said could see him miss the whole of next season.

Third choice keeper Paulo Gazzaniga and Kelvin Davis have been sharing the responsibility of keeper in recent weeks, but Koeman is keen to sign an established first choice keeper.

Arsenal are expected to allow Szczesny to leave for a cut-price deal.
