Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini has reacted to FIFA’s four month ban on Uruguayan striker Luis Suarez in a frustrated manner, saying that the ban was ‘excessive’.

Chiellini was involved in the incident that has seen Suarez banned for four months of football and miss the remainder of the World Cup.

The Juventus defender was bit on the shoulder by the Liverpool striker in their final group game at the Brazil World Cup and although not sent off for his actions, the former Ajax man received a lengthy ban.

Chiellini who returned home to Italy following the result which saw his country eliminated, has discussed the incident and said that he holds no grudges with the striker.

“Inside me there’s no feelings of joy, revenge or anger against Suarez for an incident that happened on the pitch and that’s done,” Chiellini said in a statement on his official website.

“There only remain the anger and the disappointment about the match. At the moment my only thought is for Luis and his family, because they will face a very difficult period.

“I have always considered unequivocal the disciplinary interventions by the competent bodies, but at the same time I believe that the proposed formula is excessive.”
