Liverpool are set to miss out on Argentine sensation Luciano Vietto after Atletico Madrid agreed a deal with Villarreal.

Argentine Vietto has somewhat of a breakthrough season in La Liga, having joined Villarreal last summer from Argentine side Racing Club.

He has since scored over 20 goals in all competitions and helped the Spanish side to a Europa League last-16 place.

His form has caught the attention of potential suitors Liverpool, who were extremely keen and had labelled him as their number one target this summer, but it is now understood that Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has agreed a deal in principle for this coming transfer window.

Some reports in Spain had claimed that the youngster has a £30m release clause but it is understood that a move to Atletico could cost just half that amount.

Atletico sit third in the La Liga standings, whilst Liverpool are chasing Manchester United for the final Champions League place in the Premier League.
