Paris Saint Germain were set to sign Memphis Depay 48 hours ago, but were beaten by Manchester United, according to Marcel Brands.

Brands, sporting director for Dutch club PSV revealed that the French side had already agreed a deal for the talented Dutch forward but United’s interest proved to tempting for the Eredivisie top scorer.

“PSG were already very serious for Memphis before the winter break,” Brands told Omroep Brabant. “We had reached an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain and I’d have said he would be joining PSG had you asked me about his next destination two days ago.

“Only in the last 48 hours did Manchester United step up their interest and things went very fast from there on. In the end, the player decides where he wants to go and he wanted Manchester.”

Both United and PSV confirmed earlier on Thursday that they had agreed upon a £22.3 million deal for Depay.
