Manchester United failed with a Bank Holiday Monday contract offer for Barcelona defender Dani Alves, Football Express News understands.

The Old Trafford outfit made contact with Barcelona officials late on Monday evening to offer the Brazilian defender a contract offer, but were turned down after a deal between Alves and the Catalan side edges closer to completion.

Alves will see his current deal at Camp Nou expire in June, but it is now understood a deal has been agreed for him to remain at the Spanish club.

United’s interest in the right-back has been heavy since the turn of the year, but they will now turn their attention back to Southampton and England defender Nathaniel Clyne.

Clyne has been heavily tipped to move to Old Trafford this summer and has been given 10-days by Ronald Koeman’s side to decide his future.
