United urged to sign Mexico midfielder

Herrera

Manchester United have been urged to bid for Porto midfielder Hector Herrera by their former captain, Rio Ferdinand.

The ex-England international, who left the Red Devils on a free transfer at the end of the 2013-14 campaign after 12 years at the club, has been highly-impressed by the player’s performances for Mexico in the World Cup.

Ferdinand has been present throughout the tournament in his capacity as a football pundit and feels his former employers should do everything in their power to bolster their much-maligned midfield engine room with the acquisition of Herrera.

He has helped his national side reach the knock-out stages of the competition and they come up against Holland this weekend.

United have already added one Herrera to their ranks – Ander Herrera penned a four-year deal at Old Trafford yesterday after moving from La Liga outfit Athletic Bilbao.

Ferdinand said on Twitter: “This is the Herrera I was talking about last week: @HHerreramex he has been immense for Mexico. He has a €40m buyout clause.”

United’s latest midfield signing has also been backed by Ferdinand to make a good impression if he knuckles down.

He added: “Congratulations to @anderherrera8 on joining a great club. It’s where dreams are made into reality if you work hard. You will at Man United.”
